Strategic purchases are those that help the company distinguish its offerings to its customers. For example, if your website advice helps a retailer decide which profitable products to sell on the homepage, then the advice you sell would be considered a strategic purchase.

Other purchases are non-strategic. Bookkeeping and minor website edits would be examples of such purchases. In these cases, you aren’t helping your clients differentiate themselves in the market.

Chances are that your services should be considered as strategic purchases. One reason for this is that strategic purchases command a hefty price premium. Positioning yourself as a strategic solution requires marketing that focuses on differentiating yourself from other firms. If you were just focused on website maintenance, then differentiation wouldn’t be as important and your should just offer some small, tiebreaking incentive to choose you over another provider.
